A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about “My Go-To Workout Recovery Smoothie,” where I mentioned that I use collagen peptides in my smoothies. I promised you a post going into more detail as to why I use collagen peptides and how they have helped me, so here it is!
*Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. Consult your doctor or physician before using this product, should you worry about the effects.
I’ve been using collagen peptides since about August of last year. I had heard about them before from one of my friends, Harley, who has a health and wellness blog harleyellender.com. We went to college together and she would always come into class wielding a large bottle of water, and a green smoothie with collagen peptides in it, while I on the other hand, would come in with a large caramel macchiato and a chocolate chip muffin from Starbucks (granted, not much has changed on my end). She would always tell me how good the green smoothie tasted and that the collagen peptides were so good for you and I should give them a shot.
Fast forward a couple years and I’m reading her blog one day when I see her mention collagen peptides again when talking about her coffee. She spoke so positively about them and the benefits, I decided to finally give them a shot for myself.
I purchased this Collagen Peptides Powder off Amazon to try it out and see if I noticed any major changes. I’ve heard and read that collagen peptides help with a variety of different things, but here are a main things I’ve noticed since I started taking it:
Healthier Skin
I used to take biotin for my hair, skin and nails, and I LOVED the results it had on my hair and nail health! However, it completely wrecked my skin. I broke out everywhere – face, chest, thighs – from taking the biotin, to the point where I had to halt taking it and let my skin clear up. Thinking it was just a one-time, freak occurrence, I tried two other times to take biotin over the next few years, each time having the same results – healthy hair and nails, but completely broken out skin.
This was definitely a concern of mine when I started taking the collagen peptides, since they are also known to help hair and skin health. I have been taking them for about 7-8 months now and am SO incredibly happy to say that I have not had any bad effects from the collagen on my skin! I actually can tell a noticeable improvement in my skin’s health since adding the collagen peptides to my everyday diet. My skin looks healthier and I just feel better in general. I’ve noticed my skin is having less breakouts and dry/patchy areas, and it looks brighter. By far though, the best thing is that it hasn’t caused me to break out like biotin did!
Less Knee Pain
I’ve had tendinitis in my knees since I was about 17 (runner problems). I used to periodically get steroid shots in my knees to help with the pain back when I used to run 3+ miles a day, but I was told I would eventually need to have surgery to fix the issue permanently. As a 17 year old at the time, I was not too keen on this idea and did not want to commit to having surgery and halt my running stage of my life. I’ve struggled with this on and off for years since then, tapping the breaks on running and trying to let my body heal as best as possible. For the last couple of years, my knees haven’t given me much trouble, aside from the occasional pain and swelling due to drastic weather changes or overexercising; however since I’ve started back very slowly running again and getting back into my normal exercise routine over the past few months, I’ve noticed my knees are not hurting from exercising and have not been giving me pain since I’ve started adding the collagen peptides to my coffee.
Faster Workout Recovery
I add the collagen peptides to my coffee every single morning, however I will also add them to my smoothies whenever I make one, especially my workout recovery smoothies. Whenever I add them to my post-workout smoothies, I can notice a difference in how quickly I recover from the workout. I don’t feel as tired or as sore from my workout, plus my muscles do not hurt as much the next day like they normally do. I always have at least one serving of collagen peptides each day, however whenever I have an intense workout day, I always try to add an extra serving to my diet to aid in my workout recovery.
Overall, I’m incredibly happy with the results of adding the collagen peptides to my everyday diet. I have loved what they have done for me, so I hope you all get to try them and love the results as well!
