Hi friends!
Ugh this summer heat is in FULL SWING and with the daily 90% humidity, it feels like I’m living underwater. By the end of my 10 hour workday, I feel like my hair goes from bouncy curls to frizzified lion’s mane. If I ever decide to actually go out after work instead of resuming my nightly position as a Netflix-obsessed couch potato, I have to completely redo my hair so that it looks presentable and like something you would normally find atop the head of a woman.
I started doing hair masks a few years ago in the winter time when I was trying to grow my hair longer and wanted to avoid getting it cut, but had split ends so bad they were causing the ends of my hair to closely resemble a broom. So I looked online and started reading about all different kinds of things that help keep hair looking healthy and keep split ends at bay.
That’s where this mask comes in! So after reading a bunch of different articles, I found that a simple, yet effective hair mask that’s made with just 2 simple ingredients… egg yolks and olive oil.
Sounds super gross right? I thought the same thing when I first read about it. But guys. After actually trying this hair mask and washing my hair, I was AMAZED by how well it worked!! My hair was SO soft and shiny and it really did help smooth out my frazzled ends.
I like to do this hair mask about once a month to keep my hair looking and feeling great! This mask really does help drastically reduce breakage and split ends for me, since I use heat on my hair almost everyday and also help keep frizz down in this heat and humidity!
Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients
Egg yolk
Directions
Step 1: Separate an egg yolk from the whites and place the yolk in a bowl. Discard the egg whites (or add some veggies and avocado and whip up a delectable egg white omelet. Whichever you want. You do you.)
*Tip: You can easily separate an egg yolk from the whites by squeezing an empty plastic water bottle and releasing it on the egg yolk so it sucks it up into the water bottle. Then squeeze the yolk into a separate bowl.
Step 2: Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the egg yolk and whisk together with a fork or a whisk.
Step 3: Add the mixture to the ends of your hair, working your way about halfway up. *Avoid putting the mixture on your scalp as the olive oil can tend to leave your scalp oily, even after washing!* Leave the mixture in your hair for about 45 minutes to an hour. *I like to put my hair in a bun after I work in the mixture so it does not get everywhere. You can also put your hair in a shower cap while you wait for it to soak in and work its magic!*
Step 4: Wash your hair with shampoo to remove the mixture from your hair. *Be careful not to get the water too hot as this will cause the egg to “cook” in your hair. I’ve made that mistake. Not fun having scrambled egg head.* Use conditioner after you shampoo and remove the mixture and rinse your hair with COOL/COLD WATER. This will also help with sealing those split ends and will also help to lock in shine! *I rinse my hair with cold water at the end of every shower to help reduce split ends and keep my hair shiny!*
That’s it! Enjoy your rejuvenated soft and shiny hair!
